Superstitious folks around Harrisburg and other parts of Baldwin County converged on Mt. Zion Baptist Church Wednesday morning, all part of “The Great Collard Green Giveaway.”
More than 300 bushels were given away in a mere 30 minutes.
Eating collard greens on New Years Day is an old, old tradition here in Baldwin County, and the collard greens equal good luck and good fortune. The collard greens most often are mixed with black-eyed peas on New Years Day for a concoction known as Hoppin’ John.
The event was sponsored by 100 Black Men of Oconee, the local chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, as well as Black Voters Matter.
“Even though there’s not an election going on right now, it’s just a time to come together for fellowship – white, black, young, old, Republican, Democrat,” said Quentin T. Howell, chairman of the Baldwin County Democratic Committee.
