The man involved in a fatal two-car crash in Carrington Woods last fall soon will head off to state prison.
Contavious Phelps, 24, recently had his day in court, pleading guilty to one count of first degree vehicular homicide and one count of serious injury by vehicle.
Phelps subsequently was sentenced to three years in prison and 17 more on probation. Phelps will receive credit for "time served," but that only equals four days, which represents the four days that Phelps spent in the county jail after recovering in the hospital from his injuries and turning himself in to authorities.
The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, Oct. 22, 2021. Phelps was driving his Mazda 3i along the 200 block of Lakeside Drive, which is the main cut-thru road in Carrington Woods between North Jefferson and North Columbia streets. Phelps' car then crossed over the centerline and collided head-on with a Jeep, according to the MPD press release. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash was identified as 41-year-old Joanna Smith of Milledgeville. A juvenile passenger also was in the Jeep, and both occupants sustained lesser injuries, according to the report.
The passenger in Phelps' Mazda 3i – Chelsea Hurt, 17 – was pronounced deceased at the scene. Phelps, meanwhile, was airlifted to an area hospital and went through an extensive recovery process.
A blood sample was taken at the hospital, and the Milledgeville Police Department later added DUI to the list of charges against Phelps.
Hurt was a senior at Baldwin High, set to graduate the following spring.
Hurt leaves behind her parents, three grandparents, three siblings and a host of other family, according to her obituary.
According to the original MPD press release:
The preliminary investigation indicated a 2011 Mazda 3i was traveling east on Lakeside Drive, crossed over the centerline and collided head on with a 2020 Jeep Wrangler that was traveling west on Lakeside Drive. The driver of the Mazda has been identified as 23-year-old Contavious Phelps of Milledgeville. Phelps was taken by helicopter to an area hospital with serious injuries. The passenger was pronounced deceased on scene and has been identified as 17-year-old Chelsa Hurt of Milledgeville.
