BIGGEST SPORTS STORIES OF 2022: JMA makes serious Georgia high school football history

"Made history" is an overused expression in sports, often used to describe relatively minor accomplishments.

However, in the case of the John Milledge Academy football program, there was nothing "minor" about the history that was made in 2022.

High school football has been played in the state of Georgia for more than 100 years, and never had one program gone undefeated for four consecutive seasons, until JMA did just that in 2022. The Trojans' 50th win in a row came earlier this month following a 49-0 dismantling of Deerfield-Windsor in the GIAA Class AAA state championship game over in Macon.

The JMA football program hasn't lost a football game since 2018. The previous all-time state record for consecutive wins was 47, set by Buford between 2007-2010, and JMA eclipsed that in mid-November, which even eared a re-tweet from the "guv-nuh."

There have been hundreds of thousands of high school football players in Georgia over the years. Only JMA's "Lucky 13," however, can say that they played their entire four-year careers without ever losing a game.

Following the state championship game earlier this month, Head Coach J.T. Wall wasn't about to say which state championship team is his favorite, because that would be like trying to say which one of his children is his favorite. Nevertheless, Wall said that he is extremely proud of this 2022 bunch.

"Each (state championship team) has a different meaning," the coach said. "But, this one definitely was special. Great competitors. Great leaders. A bunch of hard-working dudes. They're going to be great fathers and great husbands one day, and those guys have a lot to look forward to."
