Downtown Jay slips up

A familiar face around downtown Milledgeville recently was arrested and charged with felony burglary.

Jay Cornelius Scott, 50, is accused of squatting in a home on West Mitchell Street while the person who lives there was locked up in the county jail, in the process smoking a bunch of the man's cigarettes and eating a lot of his food. Also reported missing were roughly $200 worth of DVDs and CDs.

When the man came home after being released from jail, he spotted two men sitting on the back porch and hanging out. The tenant asked Scott and the other man to leave, which they did. The man called 911, and the investigation ultimately led to Scott, who was arrested, as well as George Otis Hogan, who has not yet been arrested.

The dollar amount for "felony" burglary in Georgia is at least $1,500 worth of items. Scott, however, was charged with a felony due to previous burglary arrests.

This marks Scott's third extended stay at the county jail in 2022. He was there for 29 days during the spring following a criminal trespass arrest, which was followed by a 41-day stay in July and August following another criminal trespass arrest.

This article makes it evident that the man needs help. He clearly cannot take care of his BASIC needs, which should be a fundamental human right. He probably wouldn't have done this if he didn't have to. Every person has to eat and you HAVE to have money in this world to survive. I'm not saying what he did was right, but his actions highlight the failure of our public systems. No one should have to feel forced to use someone else's home or eat other people's food, but to be fair - we had negative temperatures most days last week. The man did what he needed to do to at least try to take care of himself. Maybe you should report on the ridiculous failure of Milledgeville to provide basic needs to its people - including the horrible public school systems, housing, and general efforts to help people get on their feet so they can provide for themselves. This town is held up by the strings of GCSU, which just deepens the divide between local poverty and posh college students. It is embarrassing that Georgia used to call this place its capital.

You make some really strong points, but you can't force someone to get help. That's obviously the problem with people with addiction. Definitely wish the best for Jay, however. He's genuinely a good guy!
