Baldwin bows out in first round of playoffs



A season that began with a lot of promise ended with a thud on the Georgia coast on Saturday night, as Benedictine blanked Baldwin 41-0 in the first round of the GHSA Class AAAA state playoffs.

This marks the second straight year that Baldwin snuck into the playoffs as a No. 4 seed and the second straight year that they were blown out in the first round of the playoffs by a No. 1 seed. The Braves (6-5) haven't won a playoff game since 2019.

Baldwin was limited on Saturday night by the absence of Micah Welch, who missed the final three games of the season with a foot injury. Welch will graduate as one of the top five running backs in BHS program history...


The season began with a whole lot of promise. Baldwin blasted Peach County 34-13 in the opening game, which marked Peach's worst home loss in recent memory. After that came a very impressive win over Putnam County. After that, though, the Braves were incredibly inconsistent, getting into a pattern of losing one game, winning the next game and then losing the next game. Literally...

Perhaps most concerning is the number of times that Baldwin hasn't been competitive in games in recent years. The Braves have now lost a game by at least four touchdowns eight times in the last two seasons.

Graduating this spring will be Welch and top playmaker Armontae Palmer. Poised to return, however, is promising quarterback Lamar Pounds and four out of five offensive linemen. Jaylen King, a defensive lineman, is an elite athlete and bigtime college prospect who will be an 11th grader next season.
