HOMETOWN HEROES: First responders honored for role in saving lady during house fire

When everyone else is trying their best to get away from danger and chaos, first responders run towards it.

Such was the case shortly after 5 p.m. on Nov. 3, when a fire broke out at a residence on Magnolia Avenue off the Vinson Highway. First responders arrived and found "smoke and fire visible from the front side of the structure, with a female hanging out of the second floor window, trapped."

Darien Alexander, a lieutenant with Baldwin County Fire Rescue, and Jalen Webb, an officer with the Milledgeville Police Department, were two of the first to arrive. Alexander took a deep breath and grabbed “an extension ladder, put it in place and removed the female from the window and brought her down to safety. Officer Jalen Webb with Milledgeville PD assisted as well in the rescue of the victim."

Alexander and Webb were honored during the county commission's regular meeting on Tuesday night, shaking hands and receiving Certificates of Commendation. Alexander was honored "for his Act of Bravery and Extraordinary Heroism by Rescuing a Citizen from a Burning House by Climbing an Extension Ladder and Bringing Her Down to Safety," while Webb for "his Selfless Actions, Bravery and Commitment to Serving Our Community by Assisting In the Rescue of a Citizen from a Burning House."
