A peaceful Buddhist pilgrimage turned into a heartbreaking tragedy Thursday morning when a pickup truck driven by an 11-year-old boy crashed into a line of monks walking along a roadway in northeastern Thailand, killing nine monks and injuring thirteen others.

According to Thai authorities, the group consisted of 35 Buddhist monks and five lay followers who had recently begun a pilgrimage from Mukdahan Province to neighboring Ubon Ratchathani Province. The procession was walking in single file along the roadside when the pickup truck suddenly veered into the group.

Officials reported that five monks died at the scene, while four others later succumbed to their injuries at local hospitals. Three of the injured remain in critical condition as medical teams continue to provide emergency care. (AP News)

Investigators say the pickup truck was being driven by an 11-year-old boy who allegedly took his parents’ vehicle without permission before losing control. Police have taken the child into protective custody, and child protection officials are expected to conduct interviews as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. No final determination has been made regarding the cause of the collision. (AP News)

Security camera footage captured the devastating moment the vehicle left the roadway and struck the procession, sending monks and their belongings across the roadside. The images have shocked people throughout Thailand, a nation where Buddhism is practiced by the overwhelming majority of the population and monks are deeply respected members of society. Messages of grief and support have begun pouring in from across Thailand and around the world as communities mourn the lives lost. The tragedy has also renewed conversations about road safety, parental responsibility, and protecting pedestrians participating in religious events.

As the investigation continues, temples throughout Thailand are expected to hold prayers and memorial services honoring the monks whose pilgrimage ended in tragedy.

Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives, the injured monks and lay followers, and all those affected by this devastating event.
